Bradford is stacked with Victorian stone terraces and back-to-backs, most of them run up between 1820 and 1860 before the council forbade new ones, then again once that ban was lifted around 1865. Whole streets in Manningham, Girlington, West Bowling and Bradford Moor share an age, so the pointing, the roofs, the damp and the rewires come round together. Meanwhile the city centre is being taken apart and rebuilt, with the Oastler centre closed and coming down, Kirkgate due to follow and a first phase of 97 townhouses around Chain Street approved. Old stock or new, that work gets searched for from the pavement outside, and it lands in the pack for Manningham or the pack for Chain Street, never in one big pack covering all 141 square miles.
